The Young Lady's Consent

November 2007: Lowry Lab Theater, Saint Paul, MN

Playwright: Leandro Fernández de Moratín
Translated by: Christopher O. Kidder

In the tradition of Moliere and Oscar Wilde, The Young Lady's Consent follows a dutiful daughter, her greedy mother, her dashing lover, and his idealistic uncle as they stumble through a maze of mistaken identities, misplaced love notes, and tipped-over parakeets.

One of the most successful comedies in Spain's history in a new translation that captures the hilarious misadventures that result when an old, destitute woman attempts to marry off her beautiful daughter to a rich old man, only to discover that the girl loves the old man's nephew!

This production was the world premier of Kidder's new translation of the 1806 Spanish masterpiece.

Never has exposition been more entertaining than when [Calamocha and Rita] are spouting it off in order to catch up, all the while pawing each other in spite of their best efforts not to get too carried away.
