In Other Words: The Midwest Translation Festival

May 2009: Paul & Sheila Wellstone Center, Saint Paul, MN

Commedia Beauregard and four other companies combined their efforts to produce a month-long exploration of translated works at the Paul & Sheila Wellstone Center.

Commedia Beauregard - Behind the Scenes in Eden (Spain, Spanish-English)

Teatro del Pueblo - 72 Hours of Darkness (Guatemala, Spanish-English)

Nancy Donoval - Exit, Pursuing Bear (Norway & Czech Republic, Norwegian/Czech-English)

Zealots & Mystics - On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco (Russia, Russian-English/Theatre-For-The-Deaf)

Margaret Marinoff - The Eternal Return (Germany, German/English-Ballet)

In addition to those shows, which were shown on a rotating schedule, Commedia Beauregard also hosted a Midwest Theatre Translation Contest, which was won by Alex Ross. Mr. Ross's translation of The Desert Isle by Roberto Arlt (Argentina, Spanish-English), was the unanimous choice of the contests judges from the numerous entries. One night of the festival was set aside for a staged reading of the winning script. The reading was directed by Katie Willer. Additionally, Mr. Ross was awarded a monetary prize and a portion of the winning script was published in Ezra: An Online Journal of Translation, one of the festival's sponsors.
